Dr. DiBiagio is a research scientist at the Norwegian Geotechnical Institute, located in Oslo, Norway. A native of Houtzdale, PA, Dr. DiBiagio will be visiting the U.S. in early May, and has graciously agreed to give a presentation about how he got started in Civil Engineering, the variety of projects he has worked on and the many places his career has taken him. Dr. DiBiagio is an expert in the use of sensors and instrumentation systems to monitor the construction, safety and operational performance of civil engineering works and structures such as deep excavations, tunnels, landslides, dams, bridges and offshore structures. He has recently been involved in the installation of an early warning system for Usoi Dam, the world’s largest dam, located high in the Pamir mountain range in eastern Tajikistan. His photos of the people and the geography of Tajikistan are really something to see. Images Provided by Dr. DiBiagioSatellite photograph of Usoi dam in eastern Tajikistan. It is a natural dam formed by a massive landslide which blocked the Bartang valley during an earthquake in 1911. It is the world's largest dam, natural or man made.
